What the Board Does For You

1/3/2025

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you enjoyed rest and peaceful new beginnings for 2025.
Board members are often asked, "What do I get for my dues?" And "What does the Board of Directors do?" Here is a partial list of some of the benefits your all-volunteer board has provided.
  • Repaired the broken solar light on our Sunday Harbor sign (purchased by a previous board).
  • Replaced the street light bulbs with LEDs to save money, using grants from PSE to avoid depleting our savings.
  • Removed the outdated dock with minimal costs and a great deal of volunteer labor by one board member.
  • Maintain the park by contracting with a landscaping agency for seasonal mowing and by volunteers saving you money by removing dead trees and branches and maintaining the playground equipment and bark chip area.
  • Contacting the state DOT to repair the huge hole in the pavement at the junction of Blaine Road and California Trail Rd.
  • Responding to member complaints and concerns.
  • Reminding members to maintain aesthetic and safe conditions in our neighborhood.
  • Conducting business meetings to meet the needs of running the HOA efficiently and finding ways to reduce or minimize financial costs for all members.
  • Authorizing and paying the bookkeeping and accounting office to deposit dues payments, mail member statements, print and mail annual member meeting packets, pay our bills for insurance, park maintenance, street lights, and to do our annual taxes.
  • Maintaining records of business and financial transactions.
  • Helping elderly or disabled neighbors with yard maintenance.
  • Providing information to post on the website by your volunteer website manager (me!)
  • Ensuring the Registered Agent files the annual non-profit business report to the Secretary of State.
Additionally, in the past decade, the board has fended off squatters on vacant lots, enforced clean-up of a huge tire collection by a renter, authorized towing of an abandoned vehicle in the park, cleaned up the toxic mess after intruders vandalized the playground, contacted law enforcement when intruders tried to break into a vacant home, contacted Animal Control when dogs were running loose in the neighborhood, contacted a private detective to locate an deceased owner who had been MIA for over 2 years; helped the next-of-kin clean up and remove years of collected junk, and then collected thousands of dollars in back dues and fees after the next-of-kin sold the abandoned home.
I hope this list inspires you to thank a board member when you see them at the annual meeting or in the neighborhood! They live here and pay dues like everyone else, plus they volunteer to make Sunday Harbor a safe, clean, welcoming neighborhood for all. Please consider taking a turn on the board this year! Guidance is provided, even if you have never been on a board before. Best wishes to you and your families!

Refreshing playground bark

6/4/2024

A big Thank You to board member Sieneke and her spouse for taking the initiative to pull weeds and add bark chips around the swing and slide set in the Sunday Harbor park! This was a much needed project, completed at no expense to homeowners.

Potluck Picnic in the Park!

8/6/2023

Sunday Harbor Community members and friends gathered for a relaxed afternoon picnic in the park. The Board of Directors provided hot dogs, buns, and beverages. Board president Tim cooked the 'dogs on the outdoor BBQ. Introductions were made by new and long-term residents of the Sunday Harbor Community. Games and activities were provided for the younger bunch, including Croquet, Corn-Hole bean bag toss, and a Treasure hunt with Prizes for all participants. The weather cooperated with partly cloudy, breezy conditions, not too hot. All in all, folks seemed to enjoy the get together. If you missed it, hope you will join us next time!

Bonfire at the park

6/3/2023

Sunday Harbor Community board president Tim and community members Shasta & Tess enjoyed a bonfire Friday evening at the community park. After some trash and debris was removed from the fire pit, branches from winter clean up were burned, and then logs were added for a nice evening with some guitar music and singing around the campfire. Please contact Sunday Harbor board if you wish to plan an event at the park. Help us keep it looking nice by taking litter out with you, and cleaning up after pets.

Annual Member meeting

5/27/2023

The Sunday Harbor Community Association held their Annual General Meeting on Saturday, May 20th at the Blaine Library. Due to a conflict in schedules with the Blaine Oyster Festival, the turn out was lower than normal and parking was a challenge! However, enough members attended to have a quorum. The members approved the Proposed Annual budget and Fee Schedule. They approved adding a definition of Tiny Homes to the Rules for RVs and Trailers, and they approved a proposal to keep the current Bylaws and stop trying to pass the 2019 Amended Proposed Bylaws, which have failed to get 2/3 of the membership votes needed to pass.
Members elected three new Directors to the board. Welcome!
All board members are volunteers, and your neighbors. We appreciate your service!

10/7/22 Sunday Harbor Park Shelter Repair
The picnic table cover at our park had a rotten support beam. Board members were concerned that it could collapse. We budgeted our 2022-23 Park Maintenance fund to allow for the repair and then searched for a reasonable, licensed local company to do the work.  3B's Home Repair Blaine was awarded the contract and they completed the repair in 2 days. They recommended replacing the other supports at some time, but for now they are waterproofed. Heidi from 3B's added cross beam supports to the structure for more stability. The final cost was actually slightly LESS than the original bid. Check out the BEFORE and AFTER photos.
